Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, blindness in adults, and amputations. It is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and birth defects, shortens average life expectancy by up to 15 years, and costs the nation in excess of $100 billion annually in health-related spending. Diabetes is a metabolism disorder that results from a lack of insulin, which is a hormone secreted by the pancreas. Insulin is required to remove sugar (glucose) from the blood after a meal. It also prevents the liver from creating too much glucose during periods of fasting. Insulin transports glucose into the cells for use as energy and stimulates protein creation. When a person lacks sufficient insulin, they have less access to essential nutrients for fuel. An inadequate amount or inefficient action of insulin leads to high glucose levels in the blood, the hallmark of diabetes.
Traditionally, the treatment for diabetes is to normalize blood sugar levels. This is achieved with insulin injections, diet and exercise. There is, however, a natural way to help regulate insulin levels! Regular chiropractic helps with diabetes because the nervous system controls the entire body. By removing interference from the nervous system, we restore function to the body. A 2008 case report of a 9 year old girl found that her blood glucose levels stabilized following chiropractic care. Another study was done with an 80-year-old man with a history of diabetes complained of low back pain along with burning pains in the lower extremities and poor balance. The patient was treated with chiropractic care over a period of 4 months. The treatments brought about drastic improvements in both symptomatic and clinical signs of nerve function.
It may be difficult to understand the connection between the spine and diabetes. When misalignments in the spine are present, nerve fibers are stimulated because of decreased motion in the spinal joints. These stimulated nerves cause a stress response: including an increase in stress hormones like cortisol. Cortisol is important because it helps regulate insulin, which may explain why chiropractic adjustments that restore proper function to the nervous system can be related to the regulation of insulin. Although chiropractic adjustments are not the primary method to treat Diabetes, it may be a compliment to traditional treatment options. No matter the symptom, the nervous system is dictating you body’s function, so removing any interference can cause increased health!
