The average adult is made up of about 60% water, but becomes dehydrated when that drops down to 45-50%. It is so important to maintain a healthy level of hydration so that your body can function at its best. But how much water is enough water? On average, adults should be drinking about 8-16 cups (8 oz each) of water a day. Another way to think about it is by taking your body weight, divide it by two, and drink that many ounces of water per day. This will help you stay hydrated!
There are many benefits to drinking enough water, besides just knowing that you’re hydrated. Firstly, hydration helps regulate your body temperature. It also helps lubricate your joints so that they move easier. Staying hydrated can also help you get rid of the toxins in your body through sweat, urine and bowel movements. Another perk of drinking water is that it helps deliver oxygen across your body, keeping it functioning optimally. Additionally, staying properly hydrated boosts skin health, helps maintain normal blood pressure and circulation, assists with digestion, prevents kidney damage, and helps exercise performance!
The functionality of your spine requires proper hydration, too. Spinal discs are made mostly of water, but they can’t absorb water like the rest of your body. Discs don’t have a direct nutritional supply, so they absorb nutrition, including water, through a process called imbibition. Imbibition results only when there is proper motion between the joints above and below each disc. Proper motion creates a pump-like effect, allowing nutrients to move in and out of the disc. Adequate hydration is required for this essential nutrient delivery!
Unfortunately, as the body re-hydrates itself, it does not assign the spine as a priority. The vital organs take precedence, so the spine only gets what is left over. If you’re already dehydrated, then there is nothing left to re-hydrate the spine. This is why it is so important to stay hydrated and keep your spine and body functioning their best at all times!
