At Alive Chiropractic, we value approaching your health holistically. This means taking a look at EVERY part of a healthy lifestyle. That includes your diet! However, dieting can be an overwhelming task. In order to make it more approachable, here are three easy ways to start yourself on the road to a more nutritious diet!
I’m sure you’ve heard this suggestion before. But what actually are processed foods? Typically, processed foods come in a box or a jar. They can be high in fat and added sugars, low in fiber and whole grains, and processed with sodium. None of these are parts of a nutritious diet! The easiest way to avoid processed foods is to cook at home. While a busy schedule can make it challenging to make every meal from scratch, making small changes can drastically improve your health! For an easy example, try dumping the processed, sugary cereal for a high-protein breakfast such as eggs.
Organic foods are foods grown without pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or other artificial agents. They have been shown to be higher in nutrients like vitamin C, antioxidants, calcium, magnesium, iron, and other minerals. Organic foods are also free of harmful neurotoxins, which can damage brain and nerve cells. Therefore, eating organic supports the growth of our brains AND our bodies!
Did you know that the average American is eating about 400 calories a day of added sugars? These come from obvious places such as processed desserts and sugary cereals. Additionally, they can be found in juice, sports drinks, and soda. While eating refined sugar is on the rise, so are artificial sweeteners like aspartame, sucralose (Splenda), ACE K, and saccharin. These have been debated for years in regard to their damaging side effects. While all of these sweeteners are technically “safe” according to the FDA, they are coming under increased scrutiny for their side effects. These side effects range from headaches and migraines, to shrunken thymus glands, liver and kidney dysfunction, and mood disorders. There are plenty of natural sugar substitutes that can replace your go-to’s. Try raw honey, coconut sugar, stevia, pure maple syrup, dates, fruit purees, and jam!
Hopefully these tips give you encouragement to make small, consistent steps towards improving your diet.
