During these crazy times, many of us are having to set up a home office for the first time. Unfortunately, this also means we do not have access to our typical, more ergonomic tools that we would normally have at our workplaces. So, here are some easy tips from Dr. Rob that you can use to create a healthy, decked-out office space anywhere in your home!
A good home office will allow you to comfortably lay your hands flat on the work-surface in front of you. That means no bending at the wrist! If it’s too low, find a taller surface, or use something to lift your computer higher off the table or desk. If it’s too high, find a taller chair or a lower surface!
Make sure your computer screen is elevated high enough so that you’re not looking down at the screen. This is an often-forgotten step when setting up your home office! Keep your head in line over your chest, and your gaze focused forward in order to avoid strain on your neck and shoulders.
Sit back comfortably in your chair to give yourself lumbar support. It should be similar to how you sit in the driver’s set of a car – slightly leaned back! Use a rolled up bath towel or a pillow at the base of your back if needed.
Try to take a break once every 30 minutes. Anything from stretching for a minute or two, to going into your kitchen to make a cup of tea. The key is that you’re standing up and moving around!
Of course, sitting for long periods of time on a regular basis will always put strain on your spine. We help people with desk-based jobs every day at our Milwaukee area office, Alive Chiropractic. New patients will benefit from our $40 online special, which includes a complete consultation, neurological and muscle assessments, and a full doctor’s report of findings.
