Retracing is also known as “unwinding”, “detoxing”, or a “healing crisis”. It is the process by which your body rewinds and repairs previously unresolved injuries. Ultimately, this allows you to achieve a greater level of health. In this article, we explain why this is a natural part of the healing process, so you can start feeling your best!
Let’s say that you suffered a series of injuries: A, B, C, D and then E. When you suffered injuries A-D, you didn’t seek care because “they fixed themselves.” What actually happened was that your body compensated for them by healing in a non-ideal way. But now that you’ve decided to seek care after suffering E, your nervous system has to repair those older injuries as well. So, one layer at a time in reverse order – E, D, C, B and then A – your body works to resolve those unaddressed injuries. Luckily, those injuries can be resolved due to your body now functioning at a higher level!
When retracing happens, it is possible that some of the symptoms associated with that old injury may return. So even though retracing may not be the most enjoyable experience, it is a necessary part of the healing process. Does that mean mean that every symptom that you’ve ever experienced is going to come back? No! Most retracing occurs without any conscious awareness or even a hint of discomfort. It’s only when those symptoms occasionally resurface that you could become alarmed.
When you undergo chiropractic care, it is possible to have symptoms show up that you haven’t had for a long time. Your first impression is that you are becoming worse. In reality, your body is healing itself! Fortunately, now that you know that retracing is a natural and beneficial process, you’ll be better prepared if you do experience it.
Retracing can also occur emotionally. It is fairly common for people to retrace emotional as well as physical symptoms. Unprocessed trauma (e.g., grief, hatred, fear, anxiety, depression etc.) that you bottled up and buried, stays in your body. It is impossible to disconnect your subconscious mind from your physical body. If you do experience strong emotional retracing, be aware that your body is prepared. The nervous system knows innately that for the first time ever, it is safe for it to finally process that trauma! This gives you the opportunity to finally heal. It is working in your best interest! However difficult the process may be, it would not be happening unless your subconscious mind knew that you are capable of handing it!
