During menses, women don’t only experience cramping in the lower abdominal region, but also lower back pain. Pressure on the nerves leading to the uterus can be relieved through specific spinal adjustments during the menstrual cycle. Often times, this diminishes or eliminates pain in both regions. In a study performed through the National College of Chiropractic, 88% of women receiving chiropractic adjustments reported reduced pain during their period compared to women not receiving chiropractic care. This in turn can reduce or remove the need for many analgesics (i.e. Advil or Aleve), many of which can have serious side effects.
Menopause is a fact of life for all women. No matter who you are or where you’re from, at one point in your life, you’ll have to deal with this natural part of the aging process. Women assume that the biggest concern during menopause is missing monthly periods. However, facing the side effects of the decrease of hormones (particularly estrogen) in the body, can be the most difficult part. Common side-effects of this hormone withdrawal are hot flashes, mood swings, increased abdominal fat, and insomnia. Through regular, principled chiropractic care, these symptoms can be relieved! Chiropractors remove pressure on the nerves supplying these regions, improving their ability to communicate properly with the brain and the body.
Traditionally, the most common way to ease these difficult side effects is to use hormone replacement therapy, or HRT. This generally involves taking estrogen and/or progesterone replacement drugs. However, the risk to women’s health from taking these drugs has become a serious concern. Studies show that taking hormone replacement therapies can increase a woman’s risk for several serious diseases including breast cancer. In fact, one of the largest studies on the topic found that women on estrogen replacement drugs were 24% more likely to develop breast cancer than those women on no hormone therapy medications at all!
